Blue Lagoon track

Set amid flowering heathland, this freshwater lagoon is the perfect setting for a picnic, paddle or refreshing swim.

Wind through colourful coastal heathland on this short walk to a sand blow set on the edge of Blue Lagoon.

Stretch out on the smooth white sand, or take a dip in the crystal-clear blue water of the freshwater lagoon, enjoying the company of pelicans and native fish.

If you’re keen to continue exploring, carry your canoe, kayak or paddle board along the track and set off on a paddle adventure around the lagoon's forest-fringed edges.

Look for the bright colourful plumage of kingfishers perched in trees stretching over the water.

Getting there and getting around

Blue Lagoon track is in Gheebulum Kunungai (Moreton Island) National Park, 40km offshore from Brisbane. The island can be reached by ferry, barge or boat.

You can access Blue Lagoon track on the north-eastern (ocean) side of the island, from the ocean beach via Blue Lagoon access track or Blue Lagoon camping area.

You will need a 4WD for driving on the island. Four-wheel-drives with high clearance and low range function are strongly recommended. All-wheel-drive vehicles without true 4WD function and vehicles with low clearance will have difficulty along inland tracks and in soft sand, therefore we don't recommend them for Mulgumpin (Moreton Island)..

  • Remember all vehicles must be registered, drivers must be licensed and all Queensland road rules apply, even on beaches.
  • A vehicle access permit must be purchased. Display the permit on your windscreen before driving in the recreation area.
  • Read 4WD with care for important information on 4WD safety and minimal impact driving.

From Blue Lagoon access track

  • From the ocean beach, drive 450m along Blue Lagoon access track to the Blue Lagoon car park.
  • From here it is a short 200m walk to the lagoon.

From Blue Lagoon camping area

  • Take the walking track starting in the Blue Lagoon camping area (located 190m south from the main toilet and shower block) and walk 400m to the lagoon.
  • This track links up with the other walking track from the Blue Lagoon car park.

Getting to Mulgumpin (Moreton Island)

Barge and ferry access

Barges and ferries for vehicles and passengers run daily. Extra services operate in school holidays and on long weekends. Bookings are essential.

Private boat access

Mulgumpin (Moreton Island) lies in exposed waters—you may encounter large seas between Mulgumpin (Moreton Island) and the mainland. Consider your experience and the suitability of your vessel, and take into account currents and predicted weather and sea conditions when planning your trip.

  • Be aware that there are no public moorings available at Mulgumpin (Moreton Island).
  • When anchoring, make sure that your vessel, anchors and ropes don't restrict the safe movement of 4WDs or pedestrians on the beach.
