Broadwater camping area

Camp in this broad grassy camping area surrounded by eucalypt forest, and spend your days walking, swimming, canoeing and relaxing.

With eucalypt forest and a creek as a backdrop, Broadwater camping area is great place to stay. Fall asleep to nocturnal rustlings and wake to a dawn chorus of forest birds. It's very popular during weekends and school holidays so ensure you book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Wet a line in the creek (but not near the main swimming hole) or cool off with a dip. Enjoy a fry-up on the wood-fired barbeque or sit around the fire ring and swap stories by firelight. Stretch your legs on the nearby Rainforest and Creek walks and, in winter (when conditions are safe), canoe in sections of Broadwater Creek.

Getting there and getting around

The Broadwater camping area is in Broadwater, Abergowrie State Forest, 47km north west of Ingham.

  • The camping area is 16km along an unsealed access road from the entrance to the state forest.
  • Logging trucks use the access roads to Broadwater and the southern end of the Dalrymple Gap track. To reduce the risk of collision, a 3km section of the road between the Dalrymple Gap walking track and Broadwater is one-way (east to west) only. Take care when travelling in this area and obey all signs.
  • To reach Broadwater, Abergowrie from Ingham, travel 27km west along Abergowrie Road via Trebbone,then turn right at Elphinstone Pocket Road and drive a further 4km to the state forest entrance.
  • To reach Broadwater, Abergowrie from the north, turn west off the Bruce Highway onto Hawkins Creek Road, just north of the Herbert River, and drive 26km to the state forest entrance.

Opening hours

Broadwater camping area is open 24 hours a day. Check-in to your camp after 2pm and check-out by 11am on the day of departure.

Location: 16 km from the forest entrance.

Access: the camping area can be reached by conventional vehicle. It is accessible to trailers, caravans, buses and motorhomes.

Number of sites: 13 sites (separate but not numbered) and 2 large open areas without separately defined sites.

Camp sites are suitable for: tent camping beside your car, walk-in camping, caravans, camper trailers, motorhomes and large groups.

Camp site surface: grass.

Facilities: water (treat all water before drinking), flushing toilets, cold showers, picnic tables, gas barbecues (in day-use area), communal fire rings and a bulk rubbish bin.

Open fires: allowed in fire rings only (except when fire bans apply). Fuel stoves are recommended.

Generators: Generators are permitted between 9am and12 pm (midday). Generators must only be operated at less than 65dB(A), when measured 7m from the generator.
