Rainforest walk

Spot wildlife, enjoy tantalising creek views and discover the famed Broadwater fig on this circuit walk through lush riparian rainforest.

A wheelchair-accessible boardwalk leads from the southern end of the Broadwater day-use area and brings you to the imposing white fig, known as the Broadwater fig, a magnificent (although slightly battered) tree that has survived recent cyclones.

The circuit track continues through endangered riparian rainforest featuring fan palms, black beans, Alexandra palms, strangler figs, bird's nest ferns and staghorn ferns. Enjoy views of Broadwater Creek along the way. As you walk, listen and look for rainforest birds such as noisy pittas, wompoo pigeons, emerald doves, orange-footed scrubfowl and spotted catbirds. Relax with a picnic in the day-use area after your walk.

Getting there and getting around

The Rainforest walk is in Broadwater, Abergowrie State Forest, 47km north west of Ingham.

  • The Rainforest walk begins from the Broadwater day-use area, 16km along an unsealed access road from the entrance to the state forest.
  • Logging trucks use the access roads to Broadwater and the southern end of the Dalrymple Gap track. To reduce the risk of collision, a 3km section of the road between the Dalrymple Gap walking track and Broadwater is one-way (east to west) only. Take care when travelling in this area and obey all signs.
  • To reach Broadwater, Abergowrie from Ingham, travel 27km west along Abergowrie Road via Trebbone,then turn right at Elphinstone Pocket Road and drive a further 4km to the state forest entrance.
  • To reach Broadwater, Abergowrie from the north, turn west off the Bruce Highway onto Hawkins Creek Road, just north of the Herbert River, and drive 26km to the state forest entrance.

Wheelchair access

The boardwalk at the start of the Rainforest walk, as well as the toilets and showers in the nearby Broadwater camping area, and shelter shed in the Broadwater day-use area are wheelchair-accessible.

Drinking water

You can collect water from the creek and from the taps provided in the camping area.
