Instream structure inventory program

The instream structure inventory program involves conducting inventories of instream structures that impact on fish habitats in protected areas, including declared fish habitat areas (FHAs), Ramsar wetland sites and marine parks. The program links to the Declared Fish Habitat Area Network Strategy. Three years of the program (during 2008–2012) were funded by the Australian Government as part of the Queensland Wetlands Program.

The most recently completed project was undertaken in 2012 in the Great Sandy Strait Ramsar site, five declared FHAs—Susan River, Fraser Island, Maaroom, Kauri Creek and Tin Can Inlet - and the Great Sandy Marine Park.

Guidelines (PDF, 1.1MB) developed in the first year of the program outline the inventory methodology. Outcomes include a response action plan (RAP) that identifies ‘problem’ structures and makes specific management recommendations to protect fish habitat and wetland values. Project reports can be accessed via the links below.

A GIS layer of instream structures associated with the inventory reports is downloadable from the Queensland Spatial Catalogue by searching for ‘Queensland Fish Habitat Area Instream Structure Inventory Data—EXTRACT’.
