Escarpments, undulating low hills, seasonal wetlands and patches of vine-thicket are some of the landscapes protected in Alwal National Park (Cape York Peninsula Aboriginal Land) (CYPAL).
Straddling the Morehead River, the park protects the habitats favoured by near threatened (rare), endangered and vulnerable plants and animals including golden-shouldered parrots (Alwal) the namesake of the park, Cape York rock-wallabies, red goshawks and black-necked storks.
Alwal National Park (CYPAL) is jointly managed by the Olkola Aboriginal Corporation Land Trust and the Queensland Government in accordance with an Indigenous Management Agreement. Read more about joint management of Cape York Peninsula national parks.
There is currently no vehicle access or visitor facilities. The area has potential for future nature-based activities.
Location
On Cape York Peninsula, west of the Hann River Roadhouse on the Peninsula Development Road, about 100km north-west of Laura.
