Camping in Cape Melville

There are camping areas on the eastern side of Bathurst Bay near Cape Melville (Crocodile, Wongai, Oystercatcher and Granite camping areas) and at Ninian Bay.

The roads and camping areas within Cape Melville National Park (CYPAL) are not suitable for trailers, caravans, campervans or buses. Access to camping areas involves high-clearance four-wheel driving in soft sand, as well as tidal creek crossings. Stay on designated roads and formed tracks—do not drive on salt flats. Extensive vehicle recovery equipment is essential. Travelling with another vehicle is highly recommended.

Campers must be equipped for camping in an extremely remote area and be prepared for a longer stay than anticipated in case of breakdown or stranding due to wet weather. Total self-sufficiency in food, water, fuel, vehicle spare parts and recovery equipment is essential. Fresh water is extremely limited so campers should bring adequate drinking water.

Wongai trees growing in this area have significance for the Traditional Owners—please do not damage or disturb them in any way. They also provide shelter from the wind. Remember, this is a national park—everything is protected.

All camping areas in Cape Melville National Park (CYPAL) are near creeks, rivers and beaches where estuarine crocodiles occur—always be croc wise in croc country.

Camping permits must be obtained in advance and fees apply. Your booking number must be displayed at your camp site.

Park-specific conditions

Cape Melville National Park (CYPAL), including all camping areas, is closed throughout the wet season every year from 1 December to 31 July (inclusive). These dates may vary depending on weather and road conditions, and camping areas and roads may also be closed after heavy rain.

The maximum length of stay at all camping areas is 21 consecutive nights.

Generators that operate at a noise level less than 65dB(A) when measured at a distance of 7m from the generator are permitted at all camping areas in Cape Melville National Park (CYPAL).
