Russell Island camping area will be closed until further notice while management authorities make decisions about the future suitability for recreational infrastructure in this area.
Erosion has significantly affected the northern beach of the low-lying sandy portion of Russell Island. This was exacerbated by Tropical Cyclone Jasper in December 2023. Erosion now threatens the camping area as well as the safe operation and longevity of the toilet block in its current location.
For this reason, Russell Island will be closed for camping indefinitely. The island is still open for day use.
Russell Island is a Commonwealth Island managed jointly by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.
