Expression of Interest – Ecotourism Feasibility Study Whitsunday Island (closed)

The Whitsunday Island Feasibility Study contract was awarded in July 2018.

The study (now completed) investigates the opportunity to install low-impact, premium eco-accommodation, walking tracks and complementary visitor experiences on Whitsunday Island to expand on the many existing tracks, and showcase destinations such as Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet. The feasibility is the first step towards delivering on the $5 million election commitment to build a premium product on this island.

Aurecon was the successful proponent with the feasibility study completed in January 2019.

Expression of Interest – property previously known as Springbrook Mountain Manor, Springbrook Plateau (closed)

An expression of interest (EOI) process for the property previously known as the Springbrook Mountain Manor closed on 7 September 2015. Suitably experienced individuals and organisations were invited to submit their proposals for a tourism/active healthy lifestyle concept for the site.

Expression of Interest – Walkabout Creek Activity Centre, adjacent to D'Aguilar National Park (closed)

The EOI process for the development of a Commercial Activity Centre at Walkabout Creek, adjacent to D'Aguilar National Park closed on 12 December 2014.

Following assessment of EOI submissions received, one proponent was selected to proceed to the next stage of the process. This proponent is currently developing a detailed proposal for further assessment by the department.

Currently all proposals are confidential as per strict probity rules for this process. At this stage, the department cannot release any details of these proposals to any parties not involved in the evaluation process.

Expression of Interest – Green Mountains Camping Area Ecotourism Project, Lamington National Park (closed)

The EOI process for redevelopment of the existing QPWS Green Mountains Camping Area, within Lamington National Park closed 29 November 2013.

Following assessment of EOI submissions received, ecotourism operator, O’Reillys Rainforest Retreat, was selected to proceed to the next stage of the process. Read more about the Green Mountains Camping Area Ecotourism Project.

Expression of Interest (statewide) – ecotourism facilities in national parks (closed)

To communicate changes to the Nature Conservation Act 1992 (NC Act) that allow for ecotourism facilities within the protected area estate, a state-wide EOI was released in 2013. The EOI called for suitable individuals and organisations to submit ideas for the implementation of ecotourism facilities on protected areas and adjacent State land.

The state-wide EOI closed 27 September 2013. A number of proposals are currently being investigated further.

The Queensland Government will continue working closely with proponents to ensure all approved ecotourism facilities are in the public interest, are ecologically sustainable and, to the greatest possible extent, preserve the land’s natural condition and protect its cultural resources and natural values.

All proposals are confidential, governed by probity for this process and treated as commercial-in-confidence. The department does not release any details of proposals to parties not involved in the evaluation process.

Expression of Interest – Mamu Tropical Skywalk (complete)

The EOI process for the commercial management of the renamed Mamu Tropical Skywalk (formerly Mamu Rainforest Canopy Walkway) closed 8 February 2013.

Commercial management arrangements have been finalised for the Mamu Tropical Skywalk and the first ecotourism lease has been issued under the new NC Act provisions. The new commercial operator commenced management of the attraction on 31 March 2014.
