Minjerribah Protected Area Expansion Strategy

Protected areas play a vital role in maintaining and protecting Minjerribah’s (North Stradbroke Island) outstanding natural and cultural values.

The Minjerribah Protected Area Expansion Strategy outlines the prospective staged expansion of national park and other protected areas on Minjerribah by the island’s traditional owners, the Quandamooka People, and the Queensland Government.

Around half of Minjerribah is currently protected, including the Naree Budjong Djara (My Mother Earth) National Park, and it is envisaged that the amount of protected area will eventually expand to cover around 80 per cent of the island. This would enable:

• better protection of cultural and natural values
• increased visitor access to country
• new jobs in land management
• improved cultural knowledge sharing.

The Minjerribah Protected Area Expansion Strategy outlines how the expansion will be undertaken in the short-term (6 months to 18 months), as well as the medium (18 months to 5 years) and long-term (pending resources and funding).

Minjerribah country proposed to be included as protected area has been and continues to be subject to the authorisation of the Quandamooka People.

The Strategy is a commitment of Minjerribah Futures, which supports the growth of ecologically and culturally sustainable opportunities following the end of sandmining on the island.
