Set off from the Sandstone day-use area and you’ll soon see The Chimneys piercing the skyline. These three pillars, perched high on a rugged mountaintop, were hewn from the surrounding bluff of sandstone by water.
As you walk, immersed in a colourful woodland that is alive with wildflowers in spring, The Looking Glass heralds your approach to the Maranoa River. After crossing the river you’ll be astounded by more than 400 Aboriginal stencils adorning a sombre outcrop at The Tombs. The natural fissures were once used as burial chambers—and you’ll learn this and much more from the signs on the boardwalk.
