Explore the lofty heights of 'high country' of the Consuelo Tableland, following in the footsteps of Australia’s last known bushrangers, the Kenniff Brothers.
Drop into the Mount Moffatt visitor information hut for tips on tackling your 4WD adventure. Aptly named the ‘Roof of Queensland’, on this drive (18km one way from the Mount Moffatt circuit drive intersection) you'll enjoy panoramic views across the landscape. the Kenniff drive (4km one way from a turn-off on the High Country drive) traverses country that was a well-known haunt for two notorious bushrangers, the Kenniff brothers, and is steeped in adventure, tragedy and intrigue.
Along the way, take a break at the Top Shelter Shed, with its spectacular views to the cliffs of Buckland Tablelands. Travel through the rich mahogany forest, home of giant stringybarks. Your journey ends at the head of Carnarvon Creek. Spend the night at the Rotary Shelter Shed camping area before the return trip.
Getting there and getting around
The High Country drive is in the Mount Moffatt section of Carnarvon National Park in central Queensland's Sandstone Wilderness, about 220km north of Mitchell.
- The High Country drive turn-off is 22km from the park entrance.
To reach Mount Moffatt from Mitchell, drive 220km north on an unsealed road via Womblebank Station. If you are travelling from Injune, drive 160km north-west via Womblebank Station or Westgrove Station. High-clearance 4WDs are recommended and are essential to get around the park. There are no roads from Mount Moffatt direct to the other sections of the park.
