Soak up the peace and quiet in a beautiful camping area with ‘million-star rating’ and endless views, beside the Maranoa River.

After a day exploring the High Country drive by 4WD, set up camp and settle in for the night in this peaceful camping area beside the east branch of the Maranoa River. Nestled in shady woodland, and with spellbinding views of the surrounding range country, you’ll never want to leave.

Cook dinner over an open fire (remember to bring your own clean firewood from outside the park) before relaxing in your camp chair under the star-studded sky. In the morning, grab your camera and take the short walk to the nearby One Mile Creek—the early morning light is great for photographs.

Getting there and getting around

Top Moffatt camping area is in the Mount Moffatt section of Carnarvon National Park in central Queensland's Sandstone Wilderness, about 220km north of Mitchell.

  • Top Moffatt camping area is 15km east of the airstrip and 28km from the park entrance.
  • To reach Mount Moffatt from Mitchell, drive 220km north on an unsealed road via Womblebank Station. If you are travelling from Injune, drive 160km north-west via Womblebank Station or Westgrove Station. High-clearance 4WDs are recommended and are essential to get around the park. There are no roads from Mount Moffatt direct to the other sections of the park.

Top Moffatt camping area is open 24 hours a day. There are no check-in or check-out times.

Campground features: semi-open area beside the east branch of the Maranoa River.

Location: 15km east of the airstrip.

Access: 4WD only. It is accessible for high-clearance camper trailers.

Number of sites: open area without separately defined sites.

Campsites are suitable for: tent camping beside your car, walk-in camping and 4WD camper trailers.

Campsite surface: dirt.

Facilities: a pit toilet and communal fire rings.

Open fires: permitted in fire rings only, except when fire bans or prohibitions apply. Bring your own clean-milled firewood. Do not bring in or collect bush wood. Fuel stoves recommended.

Generators: not permitted.

Essentials to bring: drinking water, rubbish bags (no bins are provided), a fuel or gas stove or firewood. Read more about before you visit.
