This camp is the perfect finish to a day of 4WD adventuring on the High Country drive. Relax in this well-appointed camping area on the edge of the range and with expansive views over the surrounding countryside. At over 1000m you’ll understand why this is the called the ‘Rooftop of Queensland’.

Cook your dinner on your fuel stove before bedding down to the nocturnal sounds of the surrounding bushland. After a peaceful night, wake up early and head to the nearby Consuelo Tableland to greet the sun as it welcomes a new day.

Getting there and getting around

Rotary Shelter Shed camping area is in the Mount Moffatt section of Carnarvon National Park in central Queensland's Sandstone Wilderness, about 220km north of Mitchell.

  • Rotary Shelter Shed camping area is 34km from the park entrance.
  • To reach Mount Moffatt from Mitchell, drive 220km north on an unsealed road via Womblebank Station. If you are travelling from Injune, drive 160km north-west via Womblebank Station or Westgrove Station. High-clearance 4WDs are recommended and are essential to get around the park. There are no roads from Mount Moffatt direct to the other sections of the park.

Rotary Shelter Shed camping area is open 24 hours a day. There are no check-in or check-out times.

Location: about 17km north-east of the QPWS park office.

Access: 4WD only. It is accessible for high-clearance camper trailers.

Number of sites: open area without separately defined sites.

Campsites are suitable for: tent camping beside your car, walk-in camping, and high-clearance camper trailers.

Campsite surface: dirt.

Facilities: a picnic shelter, pit toilet, and water (treat before drinking). Water is limited and should be used for cooking and drinking only.

Open fires: permitted in the barbecues provided except when fire bans or prohibitions apply. Bring your own clean-milled firewood. Do not bring in or collect bush wood. Fuel stoves recommended.

Generators: not permitted.

Essentials to bring: drinking water, rubbish bags (no bins are provided), a fuel or gas stove or firewood. Read more about before you visit.
