Sandstone day-use area

This is a great place to start your Mount Moffatt experience! Find out all you need to know before you begin exploring!

This day-use area near the park entrance offers all the information you need before heading off to explore the rest of the park…and you don’t have to go far.

From the day-use area, walk the Maranoa River circuit track and Cathedral Rock walk to see some of the park’s remarkable sandstone formations and significant Aboriginal rock art and burial sites. Remember to take your camera!

Fuel up before you go with a picnic at one of the tables in the shady and tranquil picnic area.

Getting there and getting around

Sandstone day-use area is in the Mount Moffatt section of Carnarvon National Park in central Queensland's Sandstone Wilderness, about 220km north of Mitchell.

  • The Sandstone day-use area is 2km from the southern park entrance.
  • To reach Mount Moffatt from Mitchell, drive 220km north on an unsealed road via Womblebank Station. If you are travelling from Injune, drive 160km north-west via Womblebank Station or Westgrove Station. High-clearance 4WDs are recommended and are essential to get around the park. There are no roads from Mount Moffatt direct to the other sections of the park.
