How far in advance can I book a campsite?

All camping areas within Carnarvon National Park are open to book up to 12 months in advance.

Carnarvon Gorge camping area is open to book up to 12 months in advance though the camping area itself is only open during the Easter, June-July and September-October Queensland school holiday periods.

The Carnarvon Great Walk is available to book up to 12 months in advance though it is only open seasonally from 1 March through to and including 31 October every year.

Is there self-registration available onsite for camping?

No, there is no self-registration available onsite for all Queensland National Parks. All camping areas need to be booked before arrival using the Queensland National Parks Booking Service found on the internet.

Can I access the Great Walk from another location other than the Gorge?

Carnarvon Gorge is the main start and finish point of the Great Walk and also provides visitors with extra information including weather warning forecasts and track conditions on arrival to the visitor centre. The Great Walk is best walked in a clockwise direction beginning at Carnarvon Gorge, but you could also start from the West Branch walkers’ camp within Mount Moffatt section.

Can I drive right through the park?

There are no public access roads that run right through the park. There is however a number of road networks throughout Mount Moffatt, Salvator Rosa and Ka Ka Mundi sections of the park.

Is there two-wheel-drive access into the park?

Carnarvon Gorge section has 2WD access through to the park entrance. This is the only sealed section for 2WD access to the park.

Is 4WD needed to access the park?

Apart from Carnarvon Gorge Section of the Carnarvon National Park, all other access areas of the park are unsealed and is advised to use a 4WD vehicle. These tracks are maintained periodically and therefore caution needs to be taken. It is not advisable to traverse these tracks in wet weather as it can become extremely boggy and impassable.

Do you have hot showers and flushing toilets?

The Carnarvon Gorge camping area does not have hot showers.

There are both flushing and composting toilets in separate structures at either end of the Carnarvon Gorge camping area. Composting toilets are also located along the main walking track.

Do you have powered sites?

No, there are no powered sites available in the camping areas of Carnarvon National Park, including Carnarvon Gorge camping area. There are however powered sites available at nearby accommodation, outside the national park.

Is the Carnarvon Gorge camping area accessible for caravans or motorhomes?

No, the Carnarvon Gorge camping area is not suitable for caravans or large motorhomes. However, suitable facilities are available just outside the national park.

Where can I park my car when completing the Carnarvon Great Walk?

Visitors often park vehicles in the public car park at the Carnarvon Gorge Visitor Area whilst completing the Carnarvon Great Walk. Please be advised this is an unsecured car park and visitors are responsible for the security of their vehicle and belongings.

Are there any other camping areas in Carnarvon National Park that are accessible for caravans?

Dargonelly camping area (Mount Moffatt section) is suitable for high clearance off-road caravans, camper trailers and buses.

West Branch camping area (Mount Moffatt section) is suitable for high clearance off-road caravans and camper trailers only.

Nogoa River (Salvator Rosa section) camping area is only suited for high clearance off-road campervans and camper trailers.

Are all camping areas within Carnarvon National Park accessible for camper trailers?

Yes, camper trailers are accepted in all vehicle accessible camping areas of Carnarvon National Park. Carnarvon Gorge camping area however, does have restricted size limits. Camp site dimensions are highlighted under ‘camping information’ on the Carnarvon Gorge website.

Can I ride my bicycle on the walking tracks?

It is prohibited to ride bicycles on all walking tracks within Carnarvon National Park.

Can I have a fire?

Fires are prohibited in Carnarvon Gorge camping areas including Big Bend. Fires are prohibited along the Carnarvon Great Walk so use small fuel burners for cooking and boiling water.

Fires are permitted in fire rings provided at some Mount Moffatt section camping areas and the Nogoa River camping area within Salvator Rosa section. Fires are prohibited within Ka Ka Mundi section of Carnarvon National Park.

Can I collect firewood in the park?

It is prohibited to collect firewood within all areas of Carnarvon National Park.

Can I get mobile reception in the park?

Most areas of Carnarvon National Park have little to no phone reception and therefore is limited and unreliable.

The Carnarvon Gorge Visitor Information Centre offers free Wi-Fi from 8am to 4pm every day, and there is also access to a public phone 24 hours a day.

Can I bring my dog, cat, or horse?

Domestic animals are not permitted in any areas of Carnarvon National Park.
