Smoke from prescribed burn – Waddy Point Campground in the Great Sandy National Park – K’gari (Fraser Island) Section

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) will conduct prescribed burn operations within the K’gari (Fraser Island) section of the Great Sandy National Park near Waddy Point Campground between 04 June and 30 June 2022, weather permitting, as part of the annual hazard reduction/conservation management program for parks and forests.

As a result, smoke may be seen in Waddy Point camping areas, Orchid Beach Township and beach camping zone 8 (Marloo, Ocean Lake, Duling).

The aim of this burn is to reduce the volume of forest fuels and to create a mosaic pattern of burnt and unburnt areas.

This will help reduce the intensity of any subsequent wildfires and provide favourable conditions for natural forest regeneration.

Smoke can decrease visibility on the roads, so it is important that motorists drive safely to the conditions.

Please observe and adhere to all signage, barriers and directions from rangers and contractors, and do not enter closed areas or exclusion zones.
