Wet season opening dates revised: Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park (CYPAL)

18 April to 2 August 2019

This alert applies to the following parks:

Due to an extended wet season over 2018-19, the anticipated opening dates for all camping areas in Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park (CYPAL) have been revised. Recent flooding and impacts from ex-Tropical Cyclone Trevor mean the opportunity to complete necessary roadworks and prepare camp sites for opening will be delayed. These works will start as soon as it is possible, however it will be later than previous years.

The following camping areas south of Lakefield ranger base are anticipated to reopen 24 June 2019:

  • Kalpowar Crossing
  • Mick Fienn Waterhole
  • Dingo Waterhole
  • Old Faithful Waterhole
  • Kennedy Bend
  • Twelve Mile Lagoon – please note sites 7 and 8 will remain closed for cultural purposes
  • Six Mile Waterhole
  • Old Laura Homestead
  • Horseshoe Lagoon
  • Welcome Waterhole.

The following camping areas north of Lakefield ranger base are anticipated to reopen 1 July 2019:

  • Hann Crossing
  • Midway Waterhole
  • Saltwater Crossing.

The following camping areas north of Lakefield ranger base are anticipated to reopen 1 August 2019:

  • Sweetwater Lake
  • Annie River
  • Five Mile Creek
  • Seven Mile
  • Bizant River
  • Brown Creek
  • Basin Hole
  • Top Whiphandle Waterhole
  • Bottom Whiphandle Waterhole
  • Orange Plain Waterhole
  • Hanush’s Waterhole
  • Melaleuca Waterhole.

People with camp site bookings affected by these revised dates will be notified via email and text message. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service apologises for any inconvenience and rangers will continue to work hard to open these sites as soon as is practical.
