Changes to Whitehaven Beach day-use, campground and Solway Circuit access

This alert applies to the following parks:

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service advises that public access to Southern Whitehaven Beach walking tracks, camp and day-use areas will be restricted at times due to significant construction work being undertaken from 5 November to 31 December 2018.

The upgrades are part of the Whitsunday Islands Investment Package, an initiative to improve tourism and recreation opportunities post ex Tropical Cyclone Debbie.

They include the construction of a new lookout and walking track as well as the re-development of the camping and day-use visitor areas.

During this time barges, heli-lift activities and heavy plant machinery may be present at the beachfront. Temporary restrictions to access will be enforced to allow the safe transit and storage of materials and equipment as well as the construction of new facilities.

  • Access to toilets will remain open at all times, via the beachfront track near the day-use area.
  • Access to the day-use area will restricted at times from 26 November 2018 to 31 December 2019. Work is planned to allow use of the existing shelter and limited tables along the beachfront as much as possible.
  • Access to the camping areas will be closed from 5 November to 21 December 2018.
  • Access to the Solway Lookout will be available via a return journey along the track north of the day-use area.Visitor will be advised of any temporary closures due to heli-lift activities.

Please observe all signs, barriers and directions provided by rangers and construction workers. No unauthorised persons, including commercial tour operators and other permit or agreement holders are permitted to enter closed areas.

We thank you for your patience while these visitor facility upgrades occur.
