Department of Primary Industries sampling stations established in the 1990s, with sampling stations in Flinders River from mouth upstream to Bird Creek; seagrass monitoring sites as part of Ports Corporation of Queensland project.
Closed mixed and open Avicennia communities in riverine areas; closed and open Avicennia along parts of foreshore; extensive unvegetated salt flats associated with the estuary and foreshore sand banks.
Commercial, recreational and Indigenous fisheries; important prawn and fish nursery area; important barramundi recreational fishing destination; blue salmon; grey mackerel; king salmon; queenfish; grunter; mud crabs; jewfish.
