Trail-bike riding

There are many opportunities to ride in Queensland's parks and forests around the State if you are licensed and have a road-registered bike. Here are a few suggestions for popular places you might want to try.

Top tracks

The roads zigzagging through Beerburrum, Benarkin, Yarraman and Lockyer are ideal for a day ride. There’s more to explore at Byfield, Cathu and Mia Mia. All these roads are multi-use so remember to give way to horses and walkers and be aware of bicycles and other vehicles.

For a challenge, ride along the ‘A Break’ in the Mount Mee section of D’Aguilar, or take to the 26km trail-bike only Gheerulla trail-bike track in Mapleton. After a day of riding stay overnight at the Gheerulla camping area—limited facilities are provided and a camping permit is required.

Explore the large network of forestry roads (beware of logging trucks) through Barakula, the largest State forest in the Southern Hemisphere.

If you’re a trail-bike rider who enjoys fishing, head to Tuan where camping and fishing complete a great journey. You can explore the State forest on formed roads and then camp at The Log dump (a camping permit is required and fees apply). While you’re there, throw a fishing line into the adjacent creeks or Great Sandy Strait.

Important things to remember

  • Riders must be licenced and trail bikes must be fully registered; conditionally-registered bikes are not allowed.
  • Normal road rules apply on roads in parks and forests.
  • Signs may prohibit or regulate vehicle access on roads in parts of parks and forests. Please note, in State forests and timber reserves, if there is no sign indicating vehicle access is allowed, the road is not open for vehicle use.
  • Other vehicles—including logging trucks, four-wheel drives, mountain bikes—and horseriders also use many of the roads in different parks and forests, so take care and respect other users.
  • Off-road/off-track riding is not allowed.
  • Motocross is not permitted in national parks and State forests or timber reserves.
  • You are only required to obtain a permit if you are involved in an organised group activity, a competitive event or a commercial activity.

Ride safely

Remember to ride smart, ride safe and ride in the right place! Normal road rules apply on roads in parks, and forests but you need to be prepared for remote areas and rough terrain. Avoid accidents by following road rules and riding safely.
